BMI Calculator (Indian Standard)

Apna BMI 10 second mein nikaal — Asian-Indian cut-offs ke hisaab se, WHO wale bhi saath mein.

Numbers use the Asian-Indian BMI cut-offs recommended by the Indian Consensus Group, ICMR-NIN dietary guidelines, and WHO reference ranges — sources linked below. This is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Talk to a doctor before making decisions based on it, especially if you're pregnant, under 18, or managing a medical condition.

Bhai, BMI shayad sabse zyada search hone wala health number hai, aur sabse zyada misunderstand bhi hone wala. Yeh page tujhe seedha bata dega ki tera number ka matlab kya hai — Indian body ke hisaab se, na ki kisi US chart se.

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) ek simple ratio hai jo tera weight aur height ko compare karta hai, taaki andaza lag sake ki tera weight tere height ke hisaab se healthy range mein hai ya nahi. Yeh muscle aur fat mein farak nahi karta — sirf ek number hai, ek starting point, poori kahani nahi.

How to calculate BMI

Formula hai: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Example: agar tu 70 kg ka hai aur 1.70 m (170 cm) lamba hai, toh BMI = 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2. Calculator upar isi formula se turant result deta hai — bas apni height cm mein aur weight kg mein daal.

BMI chart for Indians: Asian-Indian cut-offs vs WHO standard

Yahi woh part hai jo global calculators skip kar dete hain. WHO ka original chart poori duniya ke liye same cut-off use karta hai, lekin Indian Consensus Group aur WHO ka apna Asia-Pacific guidance India ke liye alag, tighter cut-off recommend karta hai:

BMI rangeAsian-Indian categoryWHO (global) category
Below 18.5UnderweightUnderweight
18.5 – 22.9NormalNormal
23.0 – 24.9OverweightNormal
25.0 – 29.9ObeseOverweight
30.0+Obese (severe)Obese

Dekh, BMI 24 wala insan WHO chart pe "normal" hai, lekin Indian cut-off pe already "overweight" zone mein hai. Yeh koi chhota farak nahi — yeh farak lakhon logon ke risk assessment ko badalta hai.

Why Indians need a lower BMI cut-off than the West

Research (Indian Consensus Group ki guidance, ICMR-NIN ke saath) dikhati hai ki South Asians same BMI pe average Caucasian se zyada body fat % aur zyada visceral fat (organs ke around wali fat, jo diabetes aur heart disease ka sabse bada risk factor hai) carry karte hain. Isko kabhi-kabhi "thin-fat Indian" phenotype bhi kehte hain — bahar se patla dikhna, andar se metabolically at-risk hona. Yahi wajah hai ki India mein Type 2 diabetes aur heart disease relatively "normal" BMI walon mein bhi common hai — kuch aisa jo purane, Western-normed charts pakad nahi paate.

What your BMI result means

BMI under 18.5 — Underweight

Muscle banane ka time hai — protein aur calorie dono thoda badha, sirf junk food se nahi, structured surplus se. Kamzori, low energy, ya bar-bar bimar padna signal ho sakta hai — doctor se check karwa agar weight gain naturally nahi ho raha.

BMI 18.5–22.9 — Normal

Yahi target zone hai. Iska matlab yeh nahi ki sab perfect hai — body fat % aur waist-hip ratio bhi check kar, kyunki "normal" BMI ke saath bhi high body fat possible hai (neeche padh "skinny fat" wala part).

BMI 23–24.9 — Overweight (Asian cut-off)

Risk zone shuru ho chuki hai, lekin yahan se sudharna sabse aasan hai — 3-5 kg down se hi metabolic markers (blood sugar, BP) improve hona shuru ho jaate hain. Crash diet nahi, ek steady 300-500 kcal/day deficit kaafi hai.

BMI 25+ — Obese (Asian cut-off)

Structured plan ka time hai — diet + movement dono. Agar family history hai diabetes/heart disease ki, doctor se baseline blood test bhi karwa le, sirf number pe mat ruk.

What BMI does NOT tell you

BMI ek scale hai, ek report card nahi. Do log same height-weight pe, ekdum different body composition ke saath ho sakte hain — ek gym jaane wala jiska muscle zyada hai, aur ek sedentary insaan jiska fat zyada hai, dono ka BMI same aa sakta hai lekin health bilkul alag hai. Isse ulta bhi hota hai: "skinny fat" ya normal-weight obesity — jahan BMI normal dikhta hai (18.5-22.9) lekin body fat % actually high hota hai, kyunki muscle kam hai. Yeh India mein especially common hai desk-job professionals mein jo patle dikhte hain lekin kabhi weight training nahi kiya. BMI iska pata nahi laga sakta — isliye body fat % aur waist measurement zaroori hai poori picture ke liye.

BMI vs body fat percentage — which matters more?

Agar sirf ek quick screening chahiye, BMI theek hai — free hai, 5 second lagte hain. Lekin agar tu jaanna chahta hai ki weight loss ke baad "fat gaya ya muscle," ya tujhe "skinny fat" ka doubt hai, Body Fat % Calculator zyada honest answer deta hai — kyunki woh actually fat aur lean mass mein farak karta hai, BMI nahi karta.

How to improve your BMI, the realistic way

Chahe underweight ho ya overweight, extreme diet kabhi kaam nahi karta long-term. Roti-chawal-dal apni thali se hataane ki zaroorat nahi — portion aur protein sahi karne se kaafi farak padta hai (dekh roti vs rice guide aur katori calorie guide). Apna daily calorie target chahiye toh TDEE/Calorie Calculator use kar, aur agar height ke hisaab se target weight range dekhni hai toh Ideal Weight Calculator try kar. PCOS ya thyroid ke saath weight manage kar raha hai toh PCOS & thyroid diet chart dekh, aur shaadi-season reset ke liye 4-week reset. Full plan apne ghar ke khaane pe based chahiye — roti, chawal, dal, sabzi sab count ho — toh Coach Bhai app free mein try kar, yahi calculators uska mini version hain.

FAQs

What is a healthy BMI for an Indian adult?

For Indian adults, a BMI of 18.5-22.9 is considered normal — tighter than WHO's global 18.5-24.9 range. This is because South Asians carry more visceral fat at the same BMI as Western populations, per the Indian Consensus Group and WHO Asia-Pacific guidance.

Why is the Indian BMI cut-off lower than the WHO standard?

Research shows South Asians develop diabetes and heart disease risk at lower BMIs than Western populations, due to higher visceral (internal) fat at the same weight — often called the "thin-fat Indian" phenotype. The lower cut-off (overweight at 23, not 25) catches that risk earlier.

How do I calculate my BMI manually?

Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres, squared: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². For example, 70 kg at 1.70 m height gives 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2. Use cm ÷ 100 to convert height to metres first.

Can I have a normal BMI and still be unhealthy?

Yes — this is called "normal-weight obesity" or being "skinny fat," and it's common in India, especially among desk-job professionals with low muscle mass. BMI can't detect it because it doesn't measure body fat or muscle — only a body fat % or waist measurement can.

Is BMI different for men and women?

The BMI formula and the Asian-Indian/WHO category cut-offs are the same for men and women. What differs by gender is body fat percentage and waist-hip ratio interpretation, which are more sensitive to fat distribution than BMI is.

What BMI is considered obese in India?

Using the Asian-Indian cut-offs recommended for the Indian population, a BMI of 25 or above is classified as obese — five points lower than the WHO global obesity threshold of 30, reflecting Indians' higher health risk at a given BMI.

Is BMI accurate for athletes or people who lift weights?

No — BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so muscular or heavily trained individuals can show as "overweight" despite low body fat. A body fat percentage measurement is far more accurate for anyone who strength-trains regularly.
